Title: Vegetarian?
Post by: Cassie on December 26, 2006, 05:09:09 PM
Food .. what a great idea for a forum here but unused as yet I see.
What happens in our kitchens?
I am forever fighting my hedonism in there.
A long-time vegetarian I have been converted back to fleshly ways(and not by Infected Mushroom).  I adore fresh fish which has been a staple of my diet here in New Zealand, along with other seafood (scallops plucked from the freezing August ocean beach).
The most important thing for vegetarians is getting a good quality protein.
Useable protein consists of 28 amino acids and there is an ideal combination of these. To get a good whole protein, with all the aminos we need try combining these foods:
-Corn and red beans
-Soy beans and brown rice
-Lentils and wheat (lentills stewed with onions and spices, served on whole wheat toast or in whole wheat pita bread)
-Peanuts and milk (the good old sandwich and a glass of milk)
-Garbanzo beans (aka Chick Peas) and Sesame Seed (hooray for hummus!)
-Three seed mix : pumpkin seed kernels, sunflower seed, and sesame seed.

This is an excellent idea Cassie:)
Food being an all important factor in the way we choose to live.
Especially if we believe in the saying: "you are what you eat".

Let's share our recipes, and thoughts concerning food.
Why do we eat certain ways and why not other ways? Or are we cynics and think: "why care at all, cause after all we're fucked anyhows!". If so, then why do we think so?
Are we vegetarians, frutopians, eco-nazis, bio-biggets, meat mongers, no cooked stuff hippies, or greasy fries and fat burger fans and plain out cannibals? Why?
Are we total animal lovers, or is it just that we don't like our food being treated like crap and fed other crap?

Here are a couple links from previous attempt at this all important discussion if health of mind and body is something we are into.
An attempt at starting a recipe sharing:

Beans discussion:
To sprout or not to sprout, and the sprouts benefits.

I probably missed some spiritplants links, but there is a start.

For first recipe:
Winter roots dish: many roots are underused by people, especially in Europe, where in some countries, the roots are associated with the bad memories of the war and being hungry and poor. Yet the roots are a great provider of many needed nutrients and vitamines, so, use this winter, to re-discover the wonderful and savory world of roots.
Take any roots you find in your local market. Parsnip, beets, various types of patatoes, carrots, celery root, and more.
Cut them in equal shapes (so they all cook alike).
Add ginger, garlic, curry if you'd like, your fav spices.
Fry the mix.
Extra: add green beans, or whatever greens you might want to add, also iit adds color.

Serve hot, or cold as a salad. Sprinkle with some seeds of your choice, and enjoy this simple and nourrishing winter dish :D  :D

i am posting this from the thread "Meat and the planet" started by Syd in the World.
http://www.spiritplants.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2272 (http://www.spiritplants.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=2272)

It's pretty funny how the saying "it needs to get worth before it starts getting better" can apply to humans.

I started experimenting with vegetarianism around 12. Don't ask how i even knew that such freaky diets existed at such an early age, and living in a house full of meat eaters, and in a country where vegetarianism was NOT cool as it is now (i grew up in France), but for some reason at age 12 i stopped eating meat during a summer camp. My reason a the time was: piss of my parents.

Years after, i went through periods of being a total vegetarian, living in the usa having completely discusted me from eating industrially produced meats, to semi vegi when staying in other countries. Now back in europe, i eat meat, organic if i can, but try to not eat it too much. Fish and birds are cool; red meat and pig being a bit much, a bit like eating my neighboor, which at certain times does have its place of course;) Nothing like a nice piece of liver after a period!

My parents saw me going through my various stages, and through all of them, just thought it was some :"hippie fad", "she'll get out of it", "you're a freak kid" when i tried to tell them that they eat too much meat.
Years laters, my reasons for the way i eat are even stronger. What started as a childish rebellion has now turned into a life style choice.
Years laters, both my parents are sick. My dad had to get his leggs veins rewired, from a mix of too much fats, alcohol and not enough exercice, having the typical diet of a cliché jet lagged business man. Mam has something totally different, but i am sure that a similar diet did not help.

Now i come to the funny part:
The doc told both my parents that they should "change their diet, and eat less meats and more veggies". Exactly what i had been telling them for years, but they needed to die of their diet in order to start listening to me. What they thought was a stupid kid was actually a quite consciouss and thoughfull kid.

So goes life. Best advice, the earlier you start thinking about what you eat and why, the better it is. Unless it's already too late for you, in which case you might as well say fuck it, light up a big cigar and enjoy your glass of good whiskey.

And don't be afraid to live the way you feel is right, eventually, it pays!

thnx for this info - i became vegetarian several yrs ago when i realised how much sense it makes... but ive never really learned to cook + hav just been surviving on bread/houmous + pasta (+carrots)... i think this limited diet may b starting to hav an adverse effect on my health tho :/

Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.
