Title: Eddy
Post by: Cassie on February 07, 2005, 09:54:48 PM
I thought i would write and explain to you what my current understanding is regarding the old spf.
I spoke to eddy last on December 15th when he said he would be away for a month. I got the impression he had work of some kind and had expected a good income.  He had also just found a good school for his kid and things seemed to be looking up.
I know eddy has not always been the most reliable of admins and through this had gone some way towards pissing a lot of people off.  I do not believe it was ever with malice or forethought, just life's problems and his inability to cope.
Before he left he gave me an addy for him at his isp. (and swore me to secrecy). I mailed to this addy about a month ago and again last week.
The message i received today was of a failed delivery of the last message.
I am afraid this is very bad news and has heightened my concern that Eddy is, in fact, dead or at the very least in serious trouble (and i don't mean he's playin with JRL's band).
The first mail was delivered and the second one not .. my presumption is, therefore, that his account with them has lapsed and this is very bad news indeed because, according to chat log-ins he has had the same isp forever.
Eddy was a good friend to me in the past and helped me through some rotten times in my life and although i know he isn't perfect, i do miss him and am much saddened that something has befallen him.   Nevertheless, if he came back tomorrow i would not countenance his bein in charge of our home again. - damnit, he didn't even pick up his dirty laundry.
What i am gonna do is write to the old P.O. Box and mark the letter for the attention of his daughter. I will ask if there is anyway whoever clears his mail can arrange for some technically minded person to get access to the old site... its a long shot, but it just might get a result.

Yeah darnit.  Eddy has been an itch in the back of my head for a while now.  It just doesn't figure.

Anybody suppose Glider might have some access to the man?........ although darned if I would know how to get ahold of that guy either.  His Glider's pen site is still up though I think.  It'd be nice to at least hear from Glider for a little emotional support.  He flew pretty high in my book too.

Aint it funny how alot of us had pretty tight relationships with Eddy but nobody knows what the hell happened to him?  Used to send him random crap to his P.O. occasionally to, but never kept the addy around..... or anybodies for that matter.

If not Glider try Ringwyrm or Kemp.

But then maybe he just let the site go. Or it could just be one of those things. Who knows. Eddy has gone on extended hiatus in the past, SPF has just always been lucky enough to have some other people in command at the time.

It's sad and all, but none too alarming. If Eddy is indeed in trouble and requires assistance, then he can always easily ask the users and more than a few people here would do what they can. Otherwise, I'm not so sure it's anyones business.

I am glad SPF is back in one form or another and I hope Eddy is well (truly). But if what he wants is not to have to deal with SPF or to be in further contact with any of the users, then I hope, with all due respect, that we never find him.

That work with a good income may have been something very dangerous. That may be why Cassie is worried he's dead. Just speculation on my part but why else was it a big secret? If he was going to work on an oil rig or pan for gold, he'd probably tell us all about it.

Then again, he may be fine and that might be the reason he hasn't checked in. He lost interest in spf a long time back. Remember the thread where he suggested someone take over? No one took him up on it. I tried to revive the issue shortly before spf crashed but no one would talk about it. If someone had made arrangements back then, we wouldn't be in this situation now. Granted that I could have done something myself instead of just talk about it but with nobody chiming in, I was not in a position to do it alone. The site owner has to shed anonymity and that puts people off. It also takes a commitment of time and finances.

I don' t know about Eddy, but I've had somewhat recent contant with Glider and Ringworm, neither of whom seem to have kept up with the recent upheaval of SPF (from what I could tell I was both of their first heads up as to the forum changes .. can't blame 'em with family, work, responsibilities which have also kept me from any real active parcipation in the site these last few years... just try to tell me a full time job or grad school keeps you too busty to do something, when you ahven't had a couple infant kids added to the mix !) .

Eddy birthed this place on his own meager $, without asking or solicitng for funds.  For many years.  He seems to have fucked up and run into troubles over hte last couple years, particular with some bad ju-ju with respect to TheForest Floor.  I have no idea what happened, how it went down, but I know it panned out very badly and a lot of good info just got wiped offf hte net for good, whicch was no good for anyone.  I also have a sense that Eddy was going through some very difficult times, regardless of how that arovse.  I would just ask folks not to comepletely judge the ol' patron creator of SPF, and give this person a chance if a return occurs... i mean , we're talking of years of funding, dedication, attention and work in this community, regardless of any fucked up episodes.   And I'm willing to admit my own fucked up episodes and I'm damn willing to admit some of our admin's fucked up episodes ... no one is perfect, ... so don't disparage the person who created this magic web, but let us see if we can make it better and that if, and when the Eddy returns, Eddy may find a nurturing nest in return for the habitat provided for all us wayward souls over the years who came to call this place their virutual home.;

I have an uneasy feeling that Eddy may well be ill, or worse...  I fully agree that if and when 'da man returns; he be welcomed...  I say hats off to Eddy for providing me a place I have grown to truly care about/ a place I think of as home :!: -----------  senorsal

Another scenario is that he is out there watching, and for whatever reason is staying away.

I believe that he is OK.  I have had limited contact with him not too long ago (but before spf wend dead)- he wasn't talking to anyone much, and was barely even looking at spf...  but once in a while he would stick his head in and rattle off a short pm to me.  It wouldn't surprise me at all if he pops up sometime in the next 6 months.  What he will do when he shows up is something I can't even make a guess at, but I do think that he is OK.

I was walking out of Starbucks one evening when I bumped into some dude in a trenchcoat wearing a black hat and sunglasses. I turned to appologize for bumping into him when I noticed that he had dropped a folder. I bent over to pick it up and saw that it had the SPF logo on it. Bewildered, I looked up at the gentleman and saw that he had a tag on that said "Hi my name is: Edward". I dropped my grande decaf mocha java and he quickly snatched the folder back and ran off. I chased him calling out "Eddy wait!" and saw him run into an alley. Quickly, I sprinted into the alley after him but found it empty. There was no fence he could have climbed over or any nearby ladders he could have used to get away, just a dead end. I yealled out "Eddy! Eddy, what's wrong? We just want to know that you are okay!" over and over but got no response. A little girl in a private school uniform had taken notice of me raving like a lunatic and was staring at me from the sidewalk. "Who are you talking to mister?" she asked with her head tilted in curiosity.

I looked down at the ground panting, exhausted from running and screaming, and just shook my head. "Nobody..." I replied, "Nobody at all..." and I walked back to Starbucks to buy another coffee.

I believe jail is a far greater possibility than illness/death. Hell, both of them caused me to be suddenly absent from spf without warning, jail three times... for a young/middle-age guy, you are much more likely to end up in jail than biting the green weenie. Plus who knows, maybe his activities here had attracted the attention of authorities, who kidnapped him and shipped him to Syria to be tortured. (j/k)

...and I would posit that 'work' might be the culprit also. My employment recently'adjusted' and my online time plummetted to next to nil.

Who knows? The man has always been a bit of an enigma.
