I recently had been feeling very low, depressed and unmotivated and i was looking to my attitude, my sucesses (or lack of them) and other psychological answers to my malaise.
Then the side of my face swelled up and i went to the doc who told me i had widespread infection from a tooth i had left untended. It had crept up slowly and poisoned me.
Moral of the story: when you're feelin downhearted there could be a simple explanation.
poor cass :(
yeh i got tonsilitus once, i knew i had it but couldnt be bothered going to the doc...until mum forced me cause i lost my vision and was dizzy and had the worst hedache ever...doctor sed she had never seen such a toxic case before... 2days after i started antibiotics it was good as new..hehe my punishment for stubbornness...
my usual ailment for feeling down if untriggered is iron deficiency, you get to know the symptoms after awhile..

*vb passes cas the secret magical medicine*
Thank god for modern medicine :)
listen to what my body says
it's not kidding
QuoteThank god for modern medicine
Couldnt agree less. Totally off the chart. You can PM if you want, I will try to explain better...
I am going to have to second that oven916 modern med is not that impressive to me. They can't seem to help people with real problems and the drugs they have to offer seem to cause more harm then good. All modern med seems to be good for is a diagnosis and surgery.
LOL Pretty simplistic views above, imo. Modern medicine has its roots in traditional medicine.
A person with an infected tooth would have a much greater chance of dying due to the infection without "modern" medicine.
That doesn't mean I believe everything a doctor tells me. But modern medicine is the reason that life expectancy has gone up drastically in the last couple hundred of years.
Think there is too many people on the planet? Then go see your local witch doctor or shaman the next time you have an infected tooth.
lw
Btw, I agree that illness can make you sick. Hospitals are dangerous places. Staph infections often run rampant and the average patient risks contracting illnesses worse than what forced them into the hospital, imo..
lw
excellent point LW, average life expectancy has probably doubled in the last couple hundred years. Modern medicine can't take all the credit though, since the availability of clean water and untainted food also play a large role . It's kind of funny, when I was in China most of the people there believe in, and want western medicine. In this country large numbers of people distrust western medicine and want TCM. Truth is, some combination of both is probably best.
Oh, and I think the last numbers I saw are 60,000 people die every year from infections they got while in the hospital. Kinda scary.
illness makes you sick, sure...
but a simple transmutation occurs when using those terms like a beastie boy:
ILLNESS MAKES YOU SICK!
yah!

sorry to hear that cass :/
ive been thinking recently about the interconnexion between mental health and physical health and the extent to which they can affect each other, e.g. state of mental health having implications for physical health... any thoughts?
Indeed, i think it is well excepted that mental health can have great effects on physical health. As a personal examples; Depression can cause a effected person to kill the body or a less extreme example could be depression causing weight gain. Even a person being tense and grinding his/her teeth during the night causes physical pain.
personally, i will preach for the modern medicine, not that all new therapies are fully effecacious, but ALOT of them are lifesavers. as our understanding grows of the body, the therapies also get better. we do tend to be over medicated as a race tho (westerners), so it dulls the edge of the pharmacological sword, by giving the appearance of dullness.
I will freely admit my bias towards pharmaceuticals, as my profession is a research pharmacologist. My biggest gripe with alot of herbal medicines is the lack of peer reviewed evidence for effect. IMHO, placebo effect plays a huge role.
I have many critisms of the modern health system, mostly (biased again) that doctors donot have a proper understanding of the medicines they prescribe, but this is due to them needing to know about so many areas. I say, have faith and get a second opinion if you think the doc is off w/ his analysis, but dont be a hypocrit and bag the entire system if you would ever choose medicines for a medical condition (i.e cardiovascular drugs or antibiotics for serious infections)
On the link between the psyche and the body, it is very real, undefined but real, its the same sort of concept as the placebo effect. But when you think about it, the brain is the comand centre, so if its off (or on aka feeling amazing) then it will cause downstream signalling to the periphery which will amplify or dull systems to have a whole body effect.
I am currently reading an interesting chapter in a book titled 'Psychedelic horizons' by Thomas B Roberts. Amongst many other topics he discusses the role of psychedelic experience and immune system boosting. He looks at positive emotion and increased salivary immunoglobin A, aswell as stressful times and increased cortisol levels. And postulates that mystical experience could have great potential for immune system increase and may help to explain spontaneous remission of illnesses after such experiences....a book/chapter worth reading.
As for modern science and medicine, of course it has made some great leaps forward, though as LW said, do not believe all your doc tells you, I am currently researching the vaccination debate and was really quite shocked about it all when I started. It's too big a topic to start in this thread but I've spent months looking into it now and may make a few posts with links to info available,
