Title: Salvia newb with questions.
Post by: Psychadelic Toast on February 02, 2006, 02:10:30 AM
Ullo. I've read into salvia alot but I've never actually been able to try it out until now. I'm getting a gram of 5x extract.  Should I start out with .05 gram or .10 gram..? Which do think is best for me? I've had my experiences with psychoactives, but I keep hearing people saying even the tiniest dosage will send you off on a colossal mind-fuck and I'd really like this experience to be pleasant. Also does music really kill your high?  How frequently do you honestly sleepwalk ? I'll probably get my sister to sit for me but I'm still intersted in knowing. Anything else I should do to prepare for my voyage...? Thx. Wish me lucks! :D

The potency of extracts vary and salvia affects people differently, so its hard to say how much will be the correct amount for you.

"...like this experience to be pleasant."  There are no guarantees.

"Also does music really kill your high?"  Well its not a "high", but generally yes.  Quiet and darkness are usually best.  Although, music/drumming can have profound effects - especially live.   I would suggest something recorded to start -  The Dead - Drums/Space music.

Here's a good one - not the best/deepest, but there was a SPF contingency at this show and it stays fairly safe. http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-deta ... p?id=27439 (http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=27439)  Things get a little serious just after Uncle John's Band.  A good time to light things up.

"How frequently do you honestly sleepwalk?"
I haven't - but have known of several people that have.  I would say it is not common, but it happens so it is a good idea you have your sister to sit for you.

Here is the way I like to put it to people who are first trying it.
(i've been with over 20 people trying it their first time)

First off I prefer leaves crushed by hand into powder....but extract is fine.

The thing about Salvia is there is no way to really guage your dose, you will be smoking it being like "Awe man this is really not working", then 2 seconds later the salvia sledgehammer smashes you in the face.

The actual trips that you get off Salvia are incredible and the most intense thing i've ever felt.  They ussually last about 7 minutes smoked so there is nothing to worry about there.  You are going to want to take huge hits (out of a water bong/pipe) preferably, and hold them.

The fact still remains that for me at least Salvia kicked my ass to the curb.  Like it took me and threw away my ego and then threw away my identity entirely, followed by taking away all my knoledge of everything in the room.  After it was done doing that the trip began.

Most people who try Salvia do it for "The high" or "The trip", i've found both reasons completely useless for actually doing this.  I do it for "The Understanding", Salvia is great at showing you the unknown...it allows you to comprehend things you've never even thought possible (such as what being another person might be like, and what it's like when you are first born...for me at least).

When I first came down from Salvia I was shaking with terror infact i've heard it has been nicknamed "The Nightmare Leaf".
You will look back on what happened and be shocked.

So this is the way i've been looking at Salvia, and this is the way I see is best to approach it.  I realize that the next 7 minutes aren't going to be fun by any means.  I then realize that once it's over with the learning i've obtained from that time CRUSHES TO BITS the actuall 7 minutes of my life.
I view this not as a drug but as a learning tool, you should really try to do the same.

Lastly, lately my experiances with Salvia haven't been bad, infact they have been moderatly fun.  I guess I must have come to terms with it physchologically or something.  The 7 minute period still somewhat scares me, but i'm almost completely into just having fun during that "Learning" period.

So in conclusion I would say GO FOR IT, but have a sitter and remove sharp objects from the room...also sitting on something comfortable would probibly be nice because I doubt you are going to be doing much moving.

tell us how it goes huh?
MUCH LUCK AND HAPPY TIMES!!!

-Matt

It is hard to say what one' tolerance is going ot be like, so start small and work up from there.

Has anyone tried using crystals within the mouth and if so what kind of result came from such, would there be a standard amount needed to be active? Also, I know of the reverse tolerence ideas and things, but if used every few days has anyone ever noticed an actual tolerence to the substance?

One more question. Not that it would be safe at all, nor would the point of doing such a thing be easily found, but has anyone tried turning the etract crystal in an iv drip or anything along the nature of direct blood contact?

PS sorry for me spellin' im not always the smartestest persons. LOL

too concentrated for starters...don't even think of it.   Liquid tintures are a better way to go, if you don't like smoking.....or quidding(chewing) fresh leaves with ginger or fruit.....Welocme to SPF...

Or you could find yourself smoking massive amounts and the only alteration being what you realize is from oxygen-deprivation for your efforts. (which passes quickly - or at least as soon as you take a good clean deep breath)

I'm a pretty firm believer in growing things that one wants to partake of.. it's a respect thing... through the cultivation, a relationship is developed. I tried growing this plant at least twice. For all of my efforts and care, it was simply not meant to be. Had I taken the hint from the cultivation efforts, I would have known before ever trying to partake of the material (from another source) that this simply wasn't a "match" for me at that time in my life.

I did have one lesson reaffirmed though. Just because "everyone else" was jumping on the bandwagon of Salvia divinorum, didn't mean I should join them.

The only thing I can back up here that others have stated, is that ideally a quiet, secluded, and "still" place/location is best - perhaps a natural setting where a naturally occuring rhythmic sound is available - a shore, a waterfall, etc. And tread gently in that stillness... have a "straight" companion on-hand "just incase"...

I'm not sure if this plant simply is one that I am not aligned with, or if like so many other chemicals (natural and synthetic) I have a tolerance or immunity to the actives and subsequently "no effects". But be wise - those that are telling you to back off on the dosage are advising you for your own wellbeing. Don't blow them off.

Perhaps that has changed for you? (seeing you here posting?)  What many are finding out is that the "hard head" scenario may just be an urban myth.  It seems to be a matter of technique, (set and setting also) whether smoking or quidding,  and the issue of quality materials is always there.

Lots of info now on growing,  SPF is a great resource to ask questions. jupe

Honestly? Unlikely that I have reached a point where I "match up" with this plant. I say that not as a doubting-Thomas, but from the perspective of one who has come to realize through both intuition and logical deduction that it usually isn't "a match" until/if/when a plant (or anything else for that matter, not limited to physical  things) "calls" me. The only Salvia that whispers to me currently is Salvia apiana - and I understand the "why" of that species, just no guarantees that I will be successful in cultivating it. Though I hope to be because ethically speaking I have "issues" about the wild-harvesting of the plant for a mass market (and the subsequent destruction of so many wild 'groves' of it because of over-harvesting)... so I seek to grow it in hopes of having a carefully guarded supply of my own and maybe enough to share (and by sharing hopefully inhibit a small bit of the wild-harvesting).

As for sheer cultivation of S.d. - I just couldn't seem to keep the plants happy despite my efforts to produce an "ideal environment" - even in precisely imitating the conditions in which the mother-plants were grown. (I began, from different sources at different times, with established/rooted and growing cuttings from reliable individuals)

I might could theorize that perhaps S.d. and I don't actually need one another... long before S.d. became so "popular" and certainly long before I even knew what common garden sage was/is, I was capable of achieving the states so commonly described by others who do have effects from the plant.

On a chemical theme, I could likewise theorize that something with my body chemistry inhibits or neutralizes any potential effects from the plant. It wouldn't be so far fetched because there are many plants/their chemicals as well as man-modified and synthetic that *should* have an effect on me but don't, or that I have an allergic reaction to when I shouldn't or am in a very small percentage, or have previously undocumented (side-)effects on me.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a lovely plant - it just doesn't call me and I'm not drawn to it. Truth be told, aside from White Sage and its vibrations and use for smudge sticks, and common sage for particular foods I prepare, I'm just not generally a Salvia-person. In time that may change, or it might not. I have a couple of different culinary type sages I intend to sow (and hopefully grow) this year, but only out of a sense of "well I should, I'm doing all these other herbs" - and the fact that I do prefer to make my own herbed sea salts and like to know what's going into my food. :)

I'd write more but just found out I can catch a ride to town for some things I need to pick up... and save myself the fuel!

I know this Pineapple Sage! And I know a Pineapple Mint (variegated) that is an awesome companion plant with/for it.

I just got some *great* news a few minutes ago that directly effects (affects?) my gardening plans. It's *all* good! I can't even begin to describe the relief, but that's something for some other forum I'm sure.

At any rate, I don't currently - unfortunately - have either the Pineapple Sage or the Pineapple Mint variegated. I'm going to try and acquire a new plant of the latter from a local lady where I got my original plants, the former however for some reason I'm thinking that someone was going to send me seed or a cutting of it in some trading we've begun. But I can't remember for sure. :/
