Title: Anyone want to discuss extractions?
Post by: Stonehenge on January 28, 2005, 02:33:02 PM
Winder, you brought out a possible tec at another site where you speculated that isopropyl alcohol could be use to degunk salvia extractions. You said that cold ipa might not disolve the salvinorin but may take out the junk. What temps would this work best at?

Is anyone using a soxhlet to extract with? I have one but haven't used it yet. I have so many things I've never used or tried. It's kind of cumbersome to set up because you have to set up a condenser too and usually have running water with it. The advantage is that it'll take out every bit of whatever the solvent can take out using the minimum amount of solvent. Does anyone want to discuss their experience with using a sox? Would it work with syrian rue seeds, mhrb, dried p.v. leaves, cactus?

What herbs or seeds have people extracted from? Did you like the extract, how did it compare with commercial extracts? I'm thinking about extracting some kratom leaves. I have a bunch sitting around but maybe I'll swap them instead.

Hi all-
I have used 5% acetic acid to extract syrian rue, and a sohxlet would prolly work well with an extraction of this kind.
Supercritical extraction of cannabis prior to sohxleting would prolly also be a good thing, followed up with an isomerization.
Stoney, what capacity sohxlet were you referring to?

Cat, my sox is more or less average size. It's about 15" long and the chamber you put stuff in is maybe 8 or 9" x 2" or so. I don't think I'd use it for a vinegar extraction but I suppose you could. The temp of boiling water shouldn't hurt dmt too much. Have you done it this way before?

Your statement about extracting cannabis is interesting. You have the chem experience so I listen to you. Have you ever actually gotten any benefits from isomerisation? I guess you'd use an acid for that, but which one and for how long? Comparing unisomerized with isomerised extracts, what kind of qualitative differences have you observed. What sort of supercritical extraction would you do? Would that be under pressure and with what solvent? I think maybe you're talking about butane. That is supposed to get out all the thc. Would you then do a sox with another solvent to get the remaining goodies and would there be enough thc and related cannabinoids left to justify it? What solvent would you use with a sox and mj?

I've heard of people trying stuff like this and the butane thing is supposed to work but never heard any good results on the isomerisation. It's always something people have heard about but never done. Extracted thc by itself must be really nice even if it's not pure. I'm happy to toke some good stuff when I happen to be in a country where it's legal and maybe next time I'm there I'll try the butane but I doubt it. I'm too scared of the fire hazard and all that. It would be nice to be able to sox your bud and end up with goodies safely.

Hi, Simple request for directions:
Trying to locate article on dmt, "spiritplants.com/article/DMT.html"
gets me no where.  My shaman bud showed me article and
that address for mimosa hostilis extraction.  Where is the
article now?

Spiritplants.com is down, not sure when it'll be back.

I think you'll find what you're looking for here. (//http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/dmt/extraction_guide1/dmt_extraction_guide1.shtml)

I'd be interested in how your sox extractions went. I've done a few extractions a while back (for analytical reasons). A/B extractions, Manske extraction, various ethanol a/b for chlorophylious material. A little TLC as well, and plan on doing some more.
