Where do you get galanga? I would think an oriental grocery would be a good place to look. What do they call it? I imagine the vietnamese have a different name than indians or chinese do. What do they look like, how do you tell fresh from old?
Any luck growing those roots, Green?
I hadn't heard of this plant until I read this thread. I searched Erowid for some info, and read a few reports. And I am, yet again, struck by the attitude of Western thought that any experience in a state of alternative-consciousness must be mind-blowing to be worthwhile. Think of all the plants used around the world by so many different civilizations, none of whom feel the need to have their ego blasted away in order to gain benefits from a plant. In reading just a few reports on this plant, I read reports of people who felt it was worthless because they weren't swept away by the experience, as well as people who felt something was there and was worth exploring.
Okay, this is a bit off topic, but since the topic at hand is what made me think of it: does anyone else feel that since so many people latch onto any available legal (or non-legal) 'high', that there must be something going on with the collective conciousness of our society at this time? Something that obviously needs attending to, because so many people seem to be searching for something they're not finding.
Or do you think it's pretty much the same percentage it's always been, but since there's so many people on the earth now, that percentage turns out to be a lot of people?
Years ago I bought galangal roots in an Oriental store.
Popped the tubers in a pot, watered them, put them in the sun and soon new sprouts popped out and it grew into a beautiful plant.
