Title: Flowers 2005
Post by: TooStonedToType on December 03, 2005, 04:19:46 PM
A few flowers this year.  No seeds or anything yet.
Had a case of spider mites that set everything back some.

Nice flowers, both of you.

Do your plants survive the blooming?

I had one flower a few years back, but it croaked after it flowered.

I know TSTT's plants usually survive the flowering, but I am not sure about Jupe's.

Yes they do fine, I can't seem to keep track anymore   of what plant flowered and where they are now....its just a mess of plants.....so far, since I have started about 3 ? years ago, I still have the same "Plants"....using that term loosely.....they really like to migrate around....After they flower, I just cut the flowers, bring them inside and try to find seeds...No luck yet.  Fellow named Carl (SEAMAC) over at Yahoo has some photos of a hummingbird working on his plants in San Diego.....reminds me of our pal Vanessa @ of the Golden Salvia....wonder what ever happened to that whole thing?

Heres a picture I have been sharing of this wild patch on Maui, fellow named Aut over at Lady Salvia says its growing all by itself in the shade of a shed.  Be fun to grovel around and look for fallen leaves......Ha!!

I think this is good to ponder, this is how this plant would prefer to look....imagine the smell....(kind of a cross between pine scent, jasmine...and honeysuckle???)

those aren't  mine!!!!  The last picture is from Maui, and they are growing all by themselves, supposedly!!!!  they must love those conditions over there, warm nights, warm soil, and hot filtered sun....

Yea, the plants usually survive flowering.  However, after flowering, it seems good idea to put more light on them, 12/12 hours at least.  Take clones and repot if nitrogen levels are low.

Have you heard of anyone trying to hybridize these salvia's with any of the other salvia's? Any multihibrids out there? Admittedly, even if this were possible it could result in a plant that had no active properties. However, if breed back to S.d. one could potentially have a hybrid that was active and looked different. Of course simply breeding F1 generations to each other may result in the same effect and a lot more variation. Just food for thought. I know someone out there has assuredly already tried this to create a Salvia d. with red flowers or some such. Perhaps a more cold hardy Salvia....
