Has anybody around here tried this herb before or know of it? I have a bunch of these plants and just started to really delve into the plants composition and its uses. The more I find out about this plant the more I have become to prize it above my other medicinal plants, save Aloe. The best article so far that I have read is: http://www.itmonline.org/arts/hoshouwu.htm (http://www.itmonline.org/arts/hoshouwu.htm)
I cannot believe all of the uses this plant has and why more people in the West do not tout it as highly as the Eastern people. Just curious about any reports of its use first hand. I have not dried any root as of yet, but might in the near future as my plants are getting quite large and I am sure a little root trimming will not hurt them too much during repotting as these things grow very fast.
I am also very interresting in it. Havent tried it yet.

Thanks for the Link man. I did not notice it before.
Is this the same as bacopa? It's hard to tell from the material. I've been using bacopa but haven't noticed any amazing effects. Most of those stories are highly exaggerated, IMHO.
No they are not the same Stoney. The Fo-Ti is a climbing evergreen vine wheras the Bacopa is an amphibious plant growing in marshy areas. Fo-Ti is clinically proven and not all exageration. (I would not go so far to say it cures all though) Fo-Ti is an adaptogen wheras Bacopa is more of a neurotonic. Both are very different in there properties and makeup.
Rhodiola is an adaptogen too. It would be nice to get some fo ti seeds. Is anyone here using it every day? By exaggerated I didnt mean it was no good, I mean the 'old gray hairs turned black and he became young again' is an exaggeration.
Sorry, I came across a little harsh sounding. I did not mean to though. I need to dig up one of my plants and try it out as I am curious as to its true effects also. If you want Stoney, I would be more than happy to trade you fairly low for a plant or two of Fo-ti (Hou-Shou-Wu).
Oh, and by the way, it has been clinically proven that Fo-ti does indeed help to restore and maintain hair color.

Whoa, really? Have a source on that/those clinical studies?
There are both positive and negative effects of this plant, albeit much more positive than negative. If you have a subscription to Medline there is a scientific article about its anti-aging properties. The PMID number is 2758519. Plus this plant contains
chrysophanol- helps with the hair thing
emodin- helps in cancer fighting
rhein- a laxative
emodin-6physcion-anti-fungal
chrysophanic acid anthrone-the hair thing again
b-sitosterol-might be useful in fighting prostate cancer
querctin-anti-cancer
for a list of chemicals in the plant: http://www.chromadex.com/Phytosearch/Fo%20ti.htm (http://www.chromadex.com/Phytosearch/Fo%20ti.htm)
Fo ti can restore hair color in some, not all people who use it. Color restoration affects only new growth @ 1/2 inch per month, so you must be on this herb a long time for best results. It has a problem with triggering bowel problems so the Chinese combine it with Lychee berry to reduce this issue. Chinese healers consider it a tonic herb with properties of increasing longevity and health, as well as increasing libido, lowering blood pressure, etc. All around a good herb...IMHO
Thanks for the info man! You sure are a wealth of it. I gotta keep a look out for ya. :D

Many years ago I took Fo Ti as a supplement, for I had heard that it could help with memory. I was a student at the time. I was only taking a half gram a day though.
The older the root the better so it's best to get it from some Chinese place that can tell you the age instead of out of the bottle. I did however try this herb i don't know the age of mine. I have been on and off it. It helped with mild energy levels and made me very aroused and that is quite common. My hair began to get fuller but i don't know about the color. You have to take it for a while but it is one of those youth herbs.
Just wanted to update I am still taking Fo ti when i stop taking the herb I can't function to well although I do have an immune disorder and I have found it the most helpful next to my probiotics. My hair is grown all the way back. I don't have a lot of grey and I am not using an old root so I think that would effect the color issue. I take 2 grams 220mg 3x a day
