Always wondered about this one.  Here's what we have from Dr. Duke:

ALPHA-ALLOCRYPTOPINE  Root
ARGEMONIC-ACID  Plant
ARGEMONINE  Plant
BERBERINE  Plant  410
CHELERYTHRINE  Root
CODEINE  Plant
COPTISINE  Seed
DIHYDROCHELERYTHRINE  Root
DIHYDROSANGUINARINE  Shoot
FAT  Seed 200000 393000
ISORHAMNETIN-3,7-DIGLUCOSIDE  Flower
ISORHAMNETIN-3-BETA-D-GLUCOSIDE  Flower
L-GLUTAMIC-ACID  Seed
LINOLEIC-ACID  Seed 96000 188600
MORPHINE  Plant
MYRISTIC-ACID  Seed
NORARGEMONINE  Fruit
OLEIC-ACID  Seed 44000 85800
PALMITIC-ACID  Seed
PALMITOLIC-ACID  Seed 12000 23600
PHYSETOLIC-ACID  Seed
PROTEIN  Seed 176000 181000
PROTOPINE  Plant  840
RESIN  Plant  17500
RICINOLEIC-ACID  Seed 20000 39300
ROMNEINE  Plant
SANGUINARINE  Seed
TANNIN

Most mentions of toxicity include mention of the seeds or seed oil, which are also the traditionally medicinally used parts of the plant.  I had thought that any "activity" for this one was found in its latex, like Papaver poppies.

You probably saw this, but it's a nice collection of abstracts about Argemone mexicana :

Hope this helps some.

You mean to tell me the prickley poppy has morphine and codiene in it? Must be so small amounts that it makes no difference or the storm troopers would make it illegal.

Someone must have dropped a bunch of poppy seed in my back yard or else they transfered some peat pots full of little poppy plants. Nice of whoever it was cause now I've got poppies growing. Just to look at and for flower arrangement of course. By the look of them they must be hens and chicks. Better than prickly poppies I think

thanks, looks like the seeds are the most problematic part of the plant

yes i agree opium poppies are much nicer to have in the garden..the lack of spines makes em alot weasier to work around
