Title: rough star thistle = cannabis substitute?
Post by: Avery L. Breath on October 22, 2005, 01:40:45 PM
Anybody know anything about this plant?

Centaurea aspera

Origin (native to where): southwest Europe

Quote from The book of grass (1967):  The leaf of Cineraria aspera is smoked by the Southern Sotho for asthma and tuberculosis. It is said to be as intoxicating as Cannabis sativa.

Online version of the book of grass can be found here, http://sunrisedancer.com/radicalreader/ ... 2&iType=21 (http://sunrisedancer.com/radicalreader/detail.asp?iArt=202&iType=21)

I tried finding anything online about this plant.  Obviously rare otherwise you would have found more on it no?  Would love to get some seed of this plant, but that seems even harder at finding a provider.  I guess I gotta go low tech and search through books (AHHHHH! Not that! Not that! )  IF anyone else finds out more info or knows, I would be highly interested.

I've heard about so many plants that were supposed to be as good as pot and none of them have even come close. I would be surprised if this one was better than dagga. Some plants like brugs are intoxicating but it's not a great stone like pot. Good luck tracking it down. If someone found a plant just as good as pot but legal they would make a fortune.

...until the politicians made it illegal.

Yeah, I assume this has already been checked out since the book was written in the 60's, but yah never know.  I couldn't find much info on it otherwise myself.

Yeah it probably could never make up for our little green friend, but I would still like to grow it and see if the rumor is true or not myself.

I thought Canavalia maritima was pretty impressive...of course my plant died and I haven't had it in a while...but it was nice.

So who's got seeds?  I'd be interested in growing some...

It shouldn't be hard to grow - its a thistle afterall.

They say it's in New York state.  http://plants.usda.gov/java/county?stat ... mbol=CEAS2 (http://plants.usda.gov/java/county?state_name=New%20York&statefips=36&symbol=CEAS2)

"Habitat - Poor, sandy soils, established sand-dunes

Comments - This plant has come and gone over the last two hundred years. The present plants are found only at one site at Rocquaine, where they have established a stable population. Also known in Alderney, Jersey, and a couple of areas in South Wales"

Who's in  Rocquaine, Alderney, Jersey or South Wales and are low on banana skins?
