The Long House / Here I is!

Oops! Sorry to disappear...I was offered a last minute opportunity to spend the last several weeks of my convalescence in a rough cabin in the Adirondacks, and took it. Day after day of quiet, beauty, and hiking. Good for the body and soul both. But I won't miss the outhouse and jerry cans of water...cold "showers" :shock:
I'll suss out the contest results next, but anyone who placed should go ahead and send me an addy for their prize. Any ties (I haven't looked yet) will be honored with prizes.

Brothers and Sisters, Spirits and Plants, it is time for the 1st Long House Story Slam.
Our theme: Friends & Allies.
We all know that friendships beyond the ken of the unallied world are forged among Spirit Plants. Please share a story of friendship(s) found or deepened in the shared experience of entheogens.
Here's the deal:
(with special thanks to roach, who suggested the contest and contributed much to the plan)
Revised Entry Guidelines:
1. Submit your past or new post directly to this thread, cut and paste someone else's (with their permission first, please), or submit a super duper double secret post to me, space, via PM by midnight, August 3, EST.
2. Entries can be short and sweet or long and sharp, prose or verse, rant, rap or song: if you have a one paragraph post that says exactly what you want to say on the topic, that's fine.
2. Winners will be chosen by a membership poll conducted over the week following the deadline. The poll will open just after midnight, August 3, and close at midnight, August 10, EST.
3. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.
4. While the suspense builds, you can also participate by helping to sweeten the pot: post your prize contribution and specify which winner (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) should receive it. If you want to contribute anonymously, PM me with your prize pledge, and I will add it to the thread.
5. Only registered Spiritplanters are eligible to enter the contest and vote in the poll.
6. There are no length, form, format, style, or other entry requirements except for the Friends & Allies theme and a recognizable title to use in the membership poll.

Half-pound of savlia leaf.

roach, I think it's a great idea: best article, best tale, best link to enthnobotanical site/resource, best propagation technique, etc.
I'll pitch in on prizes: let me sort through my hoard for a day or two.
We could run a contest thread with a one member/one vote poll at the end to determine winners (which would also promote community involvement). If they were judged contests, perhaps rotating the contest through each mod's section (with a section-appropriate theme) would keep it from being too cumbersome for any one mod.
Anyway, I'm in. Feedback from all and sundry on this notion would be nice. If our pitch falls on deaf ears, roach, let's just do our own thing (hey, that's kinda catchy!)...

Thoughts for Independence Day 2005
We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states. We get stem cell research and the best beaches (OK, that's arguable. . . ). We get Elliot Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama (Hey, careful there. . .)
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms.
Please be aware that New California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our resources in Bush's Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists,virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.
We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.
By the way, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico.

I shared this with Cassie after we talked about youthful woes on chat; she encouraged me to share further. I wrote this in my early 30s, thinking about all those younger selves...
The Poet At Eighteen
had answers.
he itched to rip
the plastic wrap
from red meaty life,
to wear out patience,
to rub smug faces
in the nothing ahead,
the nothing behind,
to catch god's eye
and not look down--
to be alive was fire,
to be young
was very heavy.
the poet at eighteen
would not have liked
the poet at 25,
who sold his hands to make trucks,
wrapped himself in gray canvas armor
to wrestle with steel,
wrapped himself in drugs to survive.
who escaped.
the poet at present
keeps them in flesh:
though every cell that made them is dead,
these bodies of poets
like beads on a string
slip and collide,
warm to the touch.

The Medicine Lodge / Promoting bone growth/fusion?

Dear Doctors Spiritus:
As some of you already know, I am approaching my hopefully final surgery to correct injuries from an auto accident a while back. The surgeon will remove two intervertebral discs--C5/6 and C6/7--and replace them with pieces of bone removed from my hip and shaped to fit. I won't be able to argue anymore when Milady calls me a stiff-necked bastard.
The surgeon has warned about various activities that might retard the fusion between those bone grafts and the vertebrae--anybody have any suggestions about what might promote bone fusion?
Meanwhile (maestro, if you please)...
the hip bone's connected to the neck bone,
the neck bone's connected to the head bone,
the head bone's connected to the sky bone...
